Compassion is the ability to be with someone else in their pain. And the degree to which our kids are comfortable with their own emotions, is the degree to which they can hold space for others.
So, if we want our kids to be compassionate – getting in the muck and mire of human emotions with others – they’re going to need to learn how to be with uncomfortable emotions.
In today’s episode you’ll learn why we want to teach our kids compassion instead of sympathy (and why the difference is critical). I also coach on how we can safely expose our children to others’ suffering, so they can practice compassion. And finally, we discuss how showing compassion in our discipline can be one of our greatest opportunities as parents.
