Life can take unexpected turns, and sometimes we find ourselves wondering if motherhood is our ultimate purpose. It’s natural to feel that way, especially when you’re in the thick of it. But let’s explore why it’s important not to tie your entire sense of purpose to motherhood alone.

The Pitfall of Finding Purpose Solely in Motherhood

Motherhood is an incredible journey, filled with love, challenges, and growth. But if you find your entire purpose in being a mom, what happens when the kids grow up and leave the nest? You might be left feeling lost and without a sense of direction. It’s crucial to understand that while being a mother is a significant part of who you are, it shouldn’t be the sole source of your identity.

Many of us have been there – in the midst of motherhood, wondering, “Is this it?” This thought can bring about guilt because you adore your kids, but there’s still a part of you that feels like it’s been put on hold. Remember, what you do is not your purpose. Your purpose is who you are. When your fulfillment is tied solely to your actions or roles, it becomes vulnerable to changes.

Understanding Purpose Beyond Roles

If your purpose is connected only to your job or your role as a parent, it can feel fleeting. Lose your job, and suddenly, your sense of purpose might vanish. The same goes for when your kids grow up. This is why it’s vital to differentiate between your roles and your deeper purpose.

Pursuing activities that bring you pleasure is wonderful, but if you’re only chasing after what feels good in the moment, you might find yourself in a constant state of striving, which is exhausting. True fulfillment comes from a deeper understanding of who you are and how you fit into the bigger picture.

Seeing Yourself Through a Larger Lens

To truly understand our purpose, we need to see ourselves from an external perspective – to understand a greater design for humanity and our place within it. This means looking beyond our immediate circumstances and considering how we can contribute to a larger mission.

Consider how you can align with what’s happening around you. Is there a movement in your family or community that you can support? How can your unique gifts and talents contribute to something bigger than yourself? When you start seeing your role as part of a larger picture, your sense of purpose shifts from a personal endeavor to a collective mission.

The Broader Picture

It’s not just about taking personality quizzes or finding the perfect job. Those can be parts of the puzzle, but your purpose should extend beyond your personal interests and happiness. When you’re part of something larger, the fulfillment you experience is deeper and more sustaining.

Yes, you have talents and passions. But to find a profound sense of purpose, you need to align those with a broader vision. It’s the difference between being a teacher who’s merely instructing and one who’s nurturing the next generation. Or being a mom who’s solely caregiving versus one who’s also modeling a life of purpose and engagement. Or, as in my own experience, being a lawyer who’s not just practicing law but also bringing light and encouragement into a demanding profession.

Participating in a Greater Mission

Your purpose is not and will never be solely about tasks. It’s about opening the eyes of your heart to see where you can make a difference. Pay attention to where you feel called to act, look for opportunities, and be bold in participating in a mission greater than yourself.

When you start seeing your life from this perspective and engage with the broader mission, you’ll discover a new level of purpose and identity. You’ll feel more alive and fulfilled, knowing that you’re part of something much bigger than yourself.

So, let’s start looking for those opportunities, and embrace the journey towards a purpose that transcends our roles and taps into our deepest potential. You’ve got this, and remember, your purpose is already within you – it’s just waiting for you to discover and embrace it.
