We all have those long-term goals we’re passionate about, but let’s be real—consistency can feel elusive. If you’re someone who starts strong but struggles to stay the course, this post is for you. Today, I’m sharing three consistency habits that have helped me stay committed, keep going, and celebrate meaningful milestones. Plus, there’s a bonus habit that makes all the difference when life throws curveballs.

Habit #1: I Committed Fully

There’s a huge difference between thinking about doing something and actually committing to it. Commitment goes beyond deciding—it’s about showing up, long-term, even when things get tough. When I started my podcast, I knew it might take years to gain traction, so I prepared for the long game. This mindset kept me from quitting on days when download numbers were low, or the process felt daunting.

Commitment Is Tied to Your Why
True commitment means connecting your goal to a deeper purpose. When your “why” aligns with your values, the goal becomes part of who you are, not just something you’re doing. This shift makes it easier to stay consistent because it’s meaningful to you.

Try It Yourself:

  • Reflection Exercise: Identify something you’ve been “thinking about” but haven’t fully committed to. Imagine what would change if you went all in.
  • Define Your Why: Write down your reasons for committing to that goal, so you have a source of motivation to come back to on tough days.

Habit #2: I Kept My Blinders On

When you’re working toward something big, it’s easy to get distracted by numbers, comparisons, or the need for perfection. Early on, I realized that focusing on the wins—like positive feedback or small milestones—helped me stay motivated, even when bigger goals felt out of reach.

Progress Over Perfection
Perfectionism is often the enemy of consistency. In the beginning, I spent hours editing each episode, trying to make it flawless. Over time, I set time limits for recording and editing to avoid burning out on one task. Feedback taught me that people aren’t here for perfection; they’re here for the message and the connection.

Try It Yourself:

  • Reflection Question: Where is perfectionism holding you back? Try setting a time limit on tasks to avoid getting stuck in endless tweaks.
  • Adopt a Mantra: Use “done is better than perfect” to help move through tasks that you might be tempted to overthink.

Habit #3: I Built Systems to Support My Goals

Commitment alone isn’t enough. Systems are what create consistency. By building routines around my goals, I made it easier to show up every time, even when I wasn’t feeling particularly motivated.

Examples of Systems

  • Weekly Planning: Every week, I set aside time specifically for recording and editing.
  • Batching Content: I started batching episodes, recording several at a time so that I always had content ready to go.
  • Communicating Needs: I communicated my schedule and needs with family so that everyone understood when I needed uninterrupted time.

Try It Yourself:

  • Simple Systems: Start with time-blocking for focused work or batching similar tasks. These small systems make a big difference.
  • Communicate Your Needs: Let your support network—whether that’s family, friends, or colleagues—know about your goals so they can help you stay accountable.

Bonus Habit #4: I Stayed Flexible While Remaining Committed

Consistency doesn’t mean rigidity. I learned that staying flexible doesn’t break my commitment; it reinforces it by allowing me to adapt when life shifts. When necessary, I adjusted episode frequency or release days to match what was realistic in my life.

A Sustainable Approach
Being flexible with my approach allowed me to keep creating without feeling overwhelmed. Instead of seeing consistency as a strict routine, I treated it as a way to honor my commitment in ways that fit my life. Flexibility is what helps you avoid burnout and makes room for life’s ups and downs.

Try It Yourself:

  • Evaluate for Flexibility: Think about where you could adjust your approach to fit your needs, while still honoring your commitment.

Consistency is about more than just sticking to a routine. By fully committing, keeping your focus on the big picture, and building systems to support your goals, you create a path to achieve those dreams. And remember, staying flexible allows you to adapt without losing sight of what’s important.

Ready to try it? Pick one or two of these habits to focus on this week, and start building consistency into your goals. Your big dreams are waiting, and you have the tools to make them happen.
