If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or stuck in a cycle of stress, here’s the truth: it’s not all in your head. Many symptoms you’re dealing with—fatigue, irritability, digestive issues—stem from a dysregulated nervous system. Most people don’t realize their bodies are stuck in survival mode, which is why nervous system regulation forms the foundation of burnout recovery.

Why Chronic Stress Feels Like a Heavy Backpack

Chronic stress takes a toll on your body, and to understand burnout, it’s important to look at how this process works. Stress acts as a survival mechanism. Whether you’re navigating a major life challenge or juggling everyday pressures like emails, deadlines, cranky kids, and laundry, your body responds the same way: by switching into survival mode.

In this state, your brain signals the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones prime your body to fight, flee, or freeze—essential during emergencies. The problem? Most modern stressors aren’t life-threatening. You’re not running from tigers; you’re stuck in traffic or racing through a to-do list. But your body doesn’t distinguish the difference.

The Weight of Allostatic Load

Every stressful moment adds a rock to the backpack you carry. A few rocks are manageable, but without relief, the accumulating weight becomes overwhelming. This is your allostatic load—the cumulative impact of stress—which manifests in ways you might not link to stress:

  • Fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix.
  • Irritability over small things.
  • Difficulty concentrating because your brain feels stuck in overdrive.

Trying to “just push through” doesn’t work. It’s like hiking uphill with an overloaded backpack—you’ll collapse sooner or later.

How Stress Impacts Your Body

When your nervous system remains stuck in survival mode, the effects go beyond discomfort—they can harm you over time:

  • Heart and Breathing: Your heart races, and your breathing becomes shallow, keeping you in a state of hyper-alertness. This often feels like anxiety or jitteriness.
  • Muscle Tension: Stress causes tight muscles, leading to clenched shoulders, a stiff jaw, or tension headaches. Over time, this holding pattern can result in chronic pain.
  • Digestion: Survival mode deprioritizes digestion, which can trigger bloating, cramping, or nausea. These aren’t “in your head”—your body is reallocating energy to address perceived threats.

These responses are your body’s way of signaling that it’s stuck in a stress state. The good news? You can teach your body to feel safe and relax.

The Importance of Completing the Stress Cycle

Stress isn’t the enemy; it’s how we handle it that matters. Our bodies are equipped to manage short-term stress, but unprocessed stress stays trapped in the nervous system. That’s where burnout takes root.

Regulating your nervous system isn’t about eliminating all stress—it’s about helping your body return to balance after each stressor. Picture unpacking the rocks in your backpack one by one. This creates space to handle future challenges without being crushed under the weight.

Breaking the Cycle

Burnout doesn’t happen because of stress itself—it happens when you don’t release and process it. Staying in survival mode feels like endlessly adding rocks to your backpack without ever unpacking them.

You can change this. By recognizing stress patterns and using body-based tools to regulate your nervous system, you’ll begin to feel lighter, calmer, and more in control. Together, we’ll unpack that backpack, one rock at a time.
