I want to share a mindset shift that has brought me so much freedom and joy lately. It’s something I’ve been leaning into, and it has made a significant impact on my well-being. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the world of giving ourselves permission to quit.
Permission to Quit!
One of the things I’ve been loving recently is the art of giving myself permission to quit. Now, I know quitting usually has a bad reputation – after all, who wants to be labeled a quitter? Growing up playing sports, I was taught never to quit a game or a team. Mama didn’t raise no quitters, right?
But let’s be honest, as a society, especially as women, we’ve taken this “no quitting” mantra a bit too far. We push ourselves to do things that don’t bring us joy, aren’t necessary, and might even lead us to burnout – all because we refuse to quit. It’s time to challenge that mindset.
Here’s a simple example from my week. I borrowed a book from the library, and honestly, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The old me, programmed never to quit, would have soldiered through the next 200 pages, even if it felt like a chore. But the new me, embracing the power of quitting, returned that half-read book to the library because, let’s face it, elective suffering has no place in my life. And yes, it’s a small example, but think about how often we do this in other aspects of our lives, impacting our precious bandwidth.
Avoid the Burnout
If you want to avoid burnout, remember this – you’re not required to do something just because you’re good at it or because you’ve always done it. Or simply because it feels uncomfortable to leave it unfinished. It’s okay to be a quitter.
So, here’s a little word for someone today – embrace the freedom of letting go. It’s liberating, and it’s been a game-changer for me. Saying no (aka quitting) to things that don’t bring me joy allows me to say a wholehearted yes to the things that truly matter. We are worth it.
The next time you find yourself dreading something just because you don’t want to quit, remember this – you can be a quitter, and it’s perfectly okay.
Wishing you all the freedom and joy in the world!
