Burnout is that sneaky state of exhaustion and overwhelm that seems to creep up on us when we least expect it. Suffice to say, it doesn’t happen overnight, does it? It’s more like a gradual descent into a whirlwind of compromise here, crossed boundary there, until one day, we realize we’re completely burned out.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve caught myself countless times saying, “I just need to get through this busy season, and then things will calm down.” But guess what? Another hectic period always seems to follow, and that promised rest never quite materializes. Sound familiar?

The truth is, we’ve been putting off self-care for far too long. We keep telling ourselves, “I’ll start prioritizing my needs when I have more time,” yet that elusive “more time” never arrives. It’s time to break this cycle.

But how have I gotten here?

One major contributor to burnout is our unconscious patterns and automatic responses. How many times have we said yes to something we didn’t have the bandwidth for, simply out of habit or fear of disappointing others? It’s time to start noticing these patterns and questioning why we continue to agree to things that drain us.

So, let’s talk about setting boundaries. I know, it can be uncomfortable at first, especially for us recovering people pleasers. But remember, clear is kind.

3 Things to Say

  1. “Let me think about it before I commit. Can I get back to you?” This simple statement creates space for intentional decision-making. Instead of automatically saying yes, take a moment to consider whether the commitment aligns with your energy and priorities.
  2. “I don’t have the bandwidth right now, but thanks for thinking of me.” No apologies, no excuses. Just a clear assertion of your current capacity. Remember, it’s okay to prioritize your well-being without feeling guilty.
  3. “We’re not going to be able to make it, but thanks for inviting us.” Whether it’s social events or extracurricular activities for the kids, learn to decline gracefully. Your time is precious, and it’s okay to say no to things that don’t serve you or your family.

Setting these boundaries may feel awkward at first, but trust me, it gets easier with practice. And the benefits? More joy, peace, and time to rest and recharge. Isn’t that what we all deserve?

If you’re struggling with burnout and need support, you’re not alone. Reach out for help. Whether it’s through coaching, therapy, or simply connecting with other moms who understand, prioritizing your well-being is essential.

Remember, you’re not just a mom; you’re a human being with needs and limitations, and saying no is ok. Embrace those boundaries, and watch as your journey to self-care unfolds. You’ve got this!
