hey there

TOp categories

At some point in the building of a full life, things get quietly dropped.

Not in one dramatic moment. Just gradually — one busy season at a time — until the hobby you used to love, the thing that lit something up in you, the version of yourself who had time and permission for things that were just for her… stopped making it onto the calendar.

She didn’t disappear. She just got buried. And it turns out, going back to find her is the fastest path to rebuilding joy capacity — because your nervous system already knows the way.

Why Going Back Works

The brain builds neural pathways around pleasurable experiences. When you return to something you used to love — even a small version of it — you’re not starting from scratch. You’re reactivating a pathway that already exists. Your nervous system recognizes it. It’s faster, easier, and more immediately rewarding than trying to build entirely new joy pathways from zero.

This is why the Hi-Cap Move this week isn’t about finding something new. It’s about going back to something old. Something your body already knows how to feel.

The Twenty-Second Rule

There’s a catch most people miss, and it’s the difference between a nice moment and a moment that actually shifts your baseline.

Rick Hanson’s research shows the brain needs about twenty seconds of focused, intentional presence in a positive experience to actually encode it as meaningful. Less than that and your brain registers it — yeah, that was nice — and moves on without filing it anywhere that matters.

Most of us skim the surface of good moments. We’re already thinking about the next thing before this one is over. And the nervous system never gets the signal that pleasure is safe, that joy is available, that you are allowed to receive it.

Twenty seconds of actually staying in the experience — feeling it in your body, noticing the specific quality of enjoyment it gives you — is what starts to shift the baseline. That’s your nervous system learning something new: that you are allowed to just be there, enjoying the thing you love.

This Week’s Hi-Cap Move

Two parts.

Part one: identify it. What did you used to love before life got this full? Not what you think you should love. Not what sounds impressive or healthy or productive. What actually lit something up in you. Reading fiction for no reason except that you wanted to. Dancing in your kitchen. A long bath with no agenda. Cooking something elaborate just because it sounded good. Being in nature with nowhere to be. Playing an instrument. Writing. Whatever it is.

Pick the one that made you feel most like yourself.

Part two: do a version of it this week. It doesn’t have to be the full experience. Twenty minutes counts. A small version of the thing is enough to reactivate the pathway. The point isn’t the duration — it’s the reactivation.

And when you’re in it — don’t skim past it. Stay there. Give it at least twenty seconds of real, intentional presence. Feel what it actually feels like in your body. That noticing is your nervous system learning that pleasure is safe. That joy is available. That you are allowed to receive it without earning it first.
