There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from succeeding.

You have the career, the family, the home, the full calendar that proves how much you have built. And somewhere in the running of it all, the enjoyment quietly disappeared.

Cherylanne Skolnicki calls it the freedom to enjoy the life you have built. And on this episode of Alive and Well, she lays out exactly what it takes to get it back.

The Quiet Realization

Skolnicki does not have a breakdown story. After an Ivy League degree, an MBA, and 15 years climbing the executive ranks at Procter and Gamble, she stopped one day and took a breath.

She realized she had been running hardcore since she was 13 years old in a race to what might end up being nowhere. Her words: she was climbing a ladder leaning against the wrong wall.

So she resigned. No package, no plan B, income to zero. She found out she was pregnant with her third child right after. That first year out, she gave birth to a baby, a business, and in some ways, herself.

Fourteen years later, she is the founder of Brilliant Balance, host of the top-rated Brilliant Balance podcast, and a trusted advisor to female leaders in business, medicine, law, science, entertainment, and academia.

The Goldilocks Job

One of the sharpest concepts in this conversation: the Goldilocks job.

It is the job you stay in because of the perks. The benefits, the commute, the childcare, the income. Every other option you consider is missing one of those bells and whistles, so you stay.

But the perks are not the meaning. Skolnicki calls the missing piece divine compensation: the intrinsic reward of purpose, contribution, and alignment that tells you that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing.

When lack of fulfillment is the feeling, misalignment is usually the cause. The perks were never the problem. They were the anesthesia.

Balance Is a Ballerina, Not a Pie Chart

The word balance makes most high-achieving women bristle, and Skolnicki understands why. The version most of us picture, a static split that you set and protect, does not exist.

Her reframe: balance is dynamic. Think of a ballerina. Strong core, upright, graceful, and constantly moving. She is not balanced because she never wavers. She is balanced because she keeps finding her way back to center.

You will never reach a balance that stays put. The skill is the returning. And that version is actually achievable.

The SOS Model

If you want more of anything in your life, time outside, rest, presence, fun, you need less of something else. Skolnicki is direct about this: it is mostly a zero sum game.

Her three-part model for creating space, which she calls running an SOS:

  • Stop. Some things on your list can simply be deleted. No one else picks them up. Nothing happens. Like junk mail, they just go in the bin.
  • Outsource. Delegate it free, or pay for it. Groceries delivered, tasks reassigned, support hired where the math makes sense.
  • Simplify. Lower the rigor. The meeting can be shorter. The document can be less perfect. The bed does not need hospital corners.

The level of aggression depends on the season. A brutal stretch calls for a ruthless SOS. A manageable one might need only a light pass.

Masculine and Feminine Energy: The Conversation High Achievers Need

Michelle opens up in this episode about her own decades in masculine energy: law school, big law, 11 years running her own firm, the plan, the bills, the control. And the contradiction underneath it: exhausted from doing it all, while refusing to let anyone take it from her.

Skolnicki explains why this is so common. Women who succeed in traditionally masculine environments were conditioned and rewarded for that energy. It became identity. And the cost is the inability to receive: help, care, rest, being held.

Her advice for softening is practical, not abstract: lower the stakes on the early experiments. Build trust in small, survivable steps. Let your partner plan dinner before you hand over the calendar. The nervous system learns safety through titrated exposure, not leaps.

From Asking for Help to Orchestrating

The household conversation in this episode may be the most immediately useful part for mothers.

Most women operate from the paradigm of how can I get help with all the tasks required to run this household. Skolnicki flipped it years ago: it is not her job that others help with. Five people live in the house. Running it is everyone’s job.

She calls her role the project manager. She organizes the work, and she counts that invisible labor as labor. But execution is shared, down to a detailed task list her three teenagers work from, with standards defined for every job, what good looks like, spelled out.

Her favorite teaching tool: show your kids the clean kitchen and ask what they notice. No containers on the counter, no dishes in the sink. Then later, when it is not clean, ask what is different and how to get it back. Awareness first. Execution follows.

Key Takeaways

  • Lack of fulfillment usually signals misalignment: the perks of a Goldilocks job are not the same as meaning
  • Balance is dynamic, not static: the skill is returning to center, not never wavering
  • The SOS model (stop, outsource, simplify) frees up real time, and the rigor should match the season
  • Softening out of constant masculine energy requires lowering the stakes on early experiments until trust builds
  • The household shift from asking for help to orchestrating shared ownership changes the mental load equation entirely
