You know your red. The clenched jaw, the sharp voice, the snap you replay with a wince afterward. You’ve felt it, and you’ve cleaned up after it.
What most women don’t know is their yellow, the subtle early signals that show up long before red, when the thinking brain is still online and every option is still available.
That gap between yellow and red is where everything changes. Here’s how to find yours.
Why the Anger Tools Only Work at the Right Moment
On Tuesday’s episode, the focus was five somatic tools for releasing anger activation: wall pushes, pillow slams, silent screaming, shadow boxing, and towel wringing. They work really well, but only if you reach for them at the right moment.
Most women don’t. Most women don’t reach for them until they’re already in survival brain, already snapped or one second from it. Learning to catch activation earlier is what makes the tools usable in the first place.
The Nervous System Stoplight
Think about a stoplight, with three states.
- Green is your regulated state, ventral vagal in nervous system language. You’re present, flexible, connected, and thinking clearly. Your prefrontal cortex is online, so you can make thoughtful decisions, access empathy, and respond rather than react. Green is the baseline you want to expand through capacity work.
- Yellow is early activation. Your nervous system has detected a demand, a conflict, or an accumulation of too many things, and it’s starting to mobilize. You’re not in survival brain yet, your thinking brain is still online, just getting noisy. This is the intervention zone, where the tools work and you still have choices.
- Red is survival brain fully activated. Fight or flight has taken over and the prefrontal cortex has gone partially offline. The snap has happened or it’s coming in the next thirty seconds. At red, the tools are much harder to access.
The goal isn’t to never hit yellow. Yellow is a normal, healthy part of being a human with a nervous system who lives a full and demanding life. The goal is to know your yellow, so you can reach for a tool before you cross into red.
Your Yellow Cues Are Personal
The general categories are consistent, jaw, shoulders, chest, breath, skin, eyes, voice, but the specific way they show up for you is yours. Until you’ve mapped your own yellow, you’re working with a generic map instead of your real one.
In yellow, you might notice a subtle tightening in your jaw, not clenching yet, just a firmness that wasn’t there before. Shoulders beginning to creep upward. Your breath getting a little shallower without you changing it. Warmth in your chest or face. A slight shift in your tone, your voice getting a little quieter or sharper. An urge to check your phone, clean something, or move away.
In red, it looks different. Jaw clenched. Shoulders up near your ears. Chest tight and hot. Breath either fast and shallow or held. Vision narrowed. Voice sharp, loud, or completely shut down. The decision-making part of your brain is no longer running the show.
Most women know their red. Most women don’t know their yellow. And that’s the gap.
This Week’s Hi-Cap Move
Once, just once this week, catch yourself in yellow and name what you noticed. Not fix it. Not immediately reach for a tool. Just catch it and name it.
When you feel something starting to rise, during the school morning rush, a moment with your partner, a work situation that’s escalating, pause and notice what’s happening in your body before it goes further. Where do you feel it first? Your jaw? Your shoulders? Your chest? A change in your breath? A shift in your voice?
Write it down in your phone notes. Even one line: “Jaw tight. Shoulders up. Felt warm in my chest.” That’s the data.
Because when you do this consistently, your awareness gets faster. The gap between activation and noticing gets shorter. And eventually you catch yellow early enough to have real options, reaching for a tool before you cross into red, before the prefrontal cortex goes offline, before the snap happens.
That gap between yellow and red is where everything changes.
